History to Present
Throughout history Salalah has played a significant role due to its strategic location for many centuries.
The trade route activity from Salalah is traced to its ports at Khor Rori (Sumhuram) and Al Balid which for over 700 years was a meeting point connecting trade across Ancient Roman, Egyptian, Indian, Persian and African empires (approximately 4th Century BC to 2nd Century AD). This history goes back to the days when Salalah was an important springboard for trade in frankincense and silk.
Prior to the establishment of Port of Salalah, maritime trade was handled at the location known then as Raysut Port, via a modest-sized facility at Raysut developed in 1971. Imports comprised of basic foodstuff, livestock, farm implements and raw materials.
In 1996 a landmark agreement between Maersk Line, Sealand and the Government of Oman paved the way for the development of a modern transshipment terminal at Salalah. It was the first government and private partnership port model in Oman.
Port Timeline – Port of Salalah port infrastructure development
|Pre 1970||Goods arrive to and from the Governarate of Dhofar through rudimentary infrastructure. Large vessels were unloaded through offshore launches and feeders, which were unloaded to the port. The method is difficult, especially during the monsoon season (Khareef) from June through September.|
|1971-1974||Government of Oman imitates development of Raysut Port (Port of Salalah) located 20 km at the outskirt of Salalah. Port infrastructure is improved costing approximately US$ 11.5 million, and accommodates vessels up to 4 meter draft.|
|1976-1980||Phase 2 of Raysut Port development advances at cost of US$ 129 million. The port is improved to receive larger vessels at an annual capacity of one million metric tons.|
|1981-1982||Phase 3 of Raysut Port establishes a container terminal equipped with one 35 ton gantry crane at a cost of approx. US$ 9 million. The development supports the government's second 5-Year Plan to further the country's economic growth via international maritime transportation.|
|1996-1998||The Government of Oman and between Maersk Line, Sealand, and a few private institutions, agree to jointly invest in the development of Raysut Port into a world-class container terminal. Port of Salalah Container Terminal is inaugurated November 1998 and wins Best Investment Project in Oman Award|
|1999||Port of Salalah sets a world record for productivity with more than 250 berth moves per hour|
|2000||Bunkering facilities are completed. General Cargo Terminal comes under Port of Salalah management|
|2001||Community focus: Summer Internship program is launched|
|2002||Volumes in Container Terminal exceed design capacity for the first time|
|2003||Expansion project for two new berths and new breakwater approved
Winner of Best Seaport Middle East at Asian Freight & Supply Chain Awards
|2005||10 million TEU celebrated
Training focus: plans to convert training department into fully equipped Training Centre set in motion.
|2006||Port receives six additional Post-Panamax Gantry Cranes|
|2007||Berth 5 completed. Container volumes exceed 2.5m TEU, General Cargo volumes exceed 2.8m ton.|

Cavotec installing 8 nos of MM400E15 units on berth 6 at CT which again has proved that Cavotec Moormaster MM400E15 are much effective on holding ships during khareef. This project costing around 1,847,340 OMR
